What is Urban Reformation

Last night I was blessed to be  invited to a Missions dinner by the head of our church’s Missions Team John Chen, along with one of our missionaries we’re sending to Thailand in the month of July, and several other people.  I was asked at one point the question what was “Urban Reformation” and what it is we’re doing.  I spoke about how we’ve gone out on the streets several times, and how we’ve had a heart for the people recently more closely related to our neighborhood.

I have been thinking more about this since last evening.  Urban Reformation was something born in my heart after God allowed me to see his sovereignty as I had never seen it before in the doctrines of Grace while moving to the city to reach the people of the city.  It was born out of a heart for the city that, here in the city there were slices from every nation, that the population density was much greater, therefore an opportunity to share the gospel with more people, and the city being one of the most difficult areas to live in fueled by Jesus Christ  and his saving a foolish enemy of God like me.  God has fashioned a hope rooted in Christ,  to see transformation like what took place with Edwards and Whitefiled.   I recently listened to biographical sermon or talk about George Whitefield by pastor John Piper.  In one section Jonathan Edwards requested that George Whitefield come to preach at the pulpit of Edwards.  One of the things that Piper noted was the fact that after the sermon there was a distinct change,  no not immediately but Johnathan Edwards had recorded I believe that there was a change that had come over the entire town over the course of the next month.  People were truly changed by God!

It has always been my hearts desire to not to point a to urban anything, or at urban reformation, but to be an agent a means in the city to point others to Christ, and the finished work of Christ on the Cross to cancel our sin debt.  This is my hope.  I pray that others will join me on this blog and or write about their experiences with their neighbors and neighborhoods in sharing the gospel, that more Christians will move here and be converted here and then write about what Jesus has done pointing to Christ !

Granted this is all through God’s means in God’s time!  One thing that Mr. Chen demonstrated to me from the missions meeting last evening was his trust in God’s Sovereignty and his trust that every talk and relationship is by God’s sovereign appointment and timing.

I received an e-mail from a friend Mike Bonham from CSIDE Church in Olathe, KS.  And I am encouraged to see God moving on the hearts of yet more people to consider the move into the city! May we as believers be change agents in the culture instead of change receivers receiving with little conviction the culture at large!  May the reality of God’s power and God’s kingdom be seen in all of these believers as they take up arms against the enemy and bring light into the darkness!

May God be glorified!
